FAQ About Tantoku Garden

What is the nearest train station or access?
We are a 3 minute walk from Kawagoe-shi station on the Tobu Tojo Line and a 7 minute walk from Hon-Kawagoe Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line.

Are there many other things to see in Kawagoe nearby? Is Kawagoe Ichiban-Gai close by?
There are many things to see in Kawagoe, which has become one of the most popular tourist attractions recently. We are 10 minutes walking distance from Ichiban-Gai, a 15 minute walk from Kataiin Shrine, 14 minute walk from Yamazaki Bekkyo, and 25 minute walk from Hikawa Shrine just to name a few.
Please feel free to ask us for directions and recommendations for the wonderful sites to visit in the city, including those popular with the locals.
Is the room smoking or non-smoking?
The room and all other indoor facilities are non-smoking. This includes the use of "vapor" and other electronic tobacco devices.
We will provide an ashtray for customers who wish to smoke in the adjacent parking space.

FAQ About Matcha & Wasanbon Experience

Due to physical issues I am unsure whether I will be able to kneel during the ceremony.
Will I be able to use a chair if uncomfortable?
Of course.
We want this to be a pleasant experience of your stay in Japan and your comfort is necessary to truly enjoy these traditions.
Can I bring small children with me?
Anybody of any age is welcome provided they will not be a hindrance to others.
We have found that even young children enjoy the tea and sweet making ceremony and are welcome to join.
Please note that while entrance to the garden for small children is free, the costs for participating in the ceremonies are the same regardless of age.
Can you just make the tea for us?
Of course.
If you would simply like to watch a tea ceremony being performed, we are happy to show that for you too.
Participation is not required.
Can we drink our tea in the gardens?
Of course.
Just inform us that is where you would like to sit, and we are happy to arrange seating with the most enjoyable view for that day.

FAQ About Meal

Can we bring our own food and drinks?
Beside baby-food or other special needs food and beverages we ask that you refrain from bringing other items so as to maintain the quality atmosphere we are wishing to share with you.
Due to physical issues I am unsure whether I will be able to kneel during the ceremony.

Do you serve alcohol and soft drinks?
We can quickly provide for beer and oolong-tea.
For other items we will be happy to arrange if you can give us some prior notice.

FAQ About Reservations

What are your operating times?
The gardens are open from 10am to 3pm Wednesdays through Sundays (Monday and Tuesday are closed except for overnight staying guests), but with prior notice we can make adjustments within reason and subject to prior reservations of other guests to better suit your schedule.
Please give us some advance notice if you require outside times.
Do you allow bookings for more than one consecutive night?
This is possible with advance notice and subject to other bookings for lunches and group tours.

FAQ About Stay

How far in advance should rooms be booked?
We can take reservations for up to 6 months in advance.
Can we book on the day of?
Due to demand, and rental service being limited to one group per day, we cannot make promises that space will be available at such short notice.
We ask that you call or check on line for any last minute availabilities.
Can we stay for more than one night?
Due to the facilities size and high demand, plus the high turnover of visitors to see the gardens, we unfortunately can only accept single night stays at this time.
What methods of payment do you accept?
We accept Japanese cash and major credit cards.
Payment is appreciated up front at the time of check-in.
Can we prepay?
Yes. Prepayment is accepted when booking online, or via bank transfer.
Or you are welcome to drop by Tantoku Garden anytime before to arrange payment.
Does overnight stay include dinner?
Dinner is not included in the price, but can be arranged. Please inform us of your desire at the time of reservation.
We can also help you with ordering in, or reserving dinner at any local restaurants as well as help you with recommendations.
Do prices differ for children?
For each adult staying, one child under the age of 6yrs can stay for free.
However, we ask you to understand that in the case of young children under the age of 6yrs we do not provide towels, pajamas, or other amenities free of charge.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is from 16:00pm and check-out is 11:00am.
We ask that you let us know in advance if you will be checking in late.
Failure to show means a cancelation of your reservation and a full charge for that night will apply.
If you have needs to check out late, we ask that you inquire about this at the time of checking in.
What are the cancelation fees?
Cancelation fees do apply and will be charged the following.
28 - 6 days day prior = 50%
5 days prior - Same day = 100%
For customers booking online we ask that you check to verify your cancelation is confirmed as failure to do so may result in fees being charged.
Can we be waitlisted for a reservation?
We do not offer wait listing for overnight stays.
We ask that you call or check the room availability for that day and call or book online if the room becomes available.
Do you provide pajamas?
Yes. We provide sleeping garments for paying customers.
Please note as above, that small children must bring their own sleepwear.
Is there water available in the room?
We provide one large bottle of mineral water plus a water boiling pot (kettle) for your stay.
Do you have Wi-Fi access?
We provide Wi-Fi free of charge.
Does the room have barrier-free/wheelchair access?
As this is a home more than a century old, and to keep it in its traditional form we do not have wheelchair access to the room or the surrounding garden.
Additionally the stairwell leading to the upper sleeping floor is very steep.
We ask for your understanding when making your reservation.
Are there facilities for leaving our luggage both before and after checking in and out?
Yes. We will gladly store your personal belongings but ask that you inform us beforehand of the times you wish to drop off or pick up your luggage so that arrangements can be made.
Is parking available?
We provide free parking for one car for customers staying overnight.
You may park your car in the grounds from the morning of the day you will check in, until the evening of the day you check out.

Do you have a safety box for valuables?
There is a safety box available in the room.
You may use it free of charge between the hours of check in to check out.
